Onshore vs Offshore Partner Visas (820/801 and 309/100)

Australia offers two main partner visa pathways depending on where you apply: onshore (subclass 820 leading to 801) and offshore (subclass 309 leading to 100). If you apply within Australia (e.g. in Perth or any city while on a valid visa), you lodge a subclass 820 and get a bridging visa to remain in the country during processing. If you apply from overseas, you lodge subclass 309 and must wait outside Australia for the initial grant. Both streams ultimately lead to permanent residency after roughly two years. Recent reforms have removed strict location requirements at time of visa grant, giving applicants more flexibility to travel during processing.
